By Maulde Cuérel, Jr. Communications Manager at swissnex Boston.
Since 2013, swissnex Boston has been operating the New York Outpost, an arm of swissnex Boston. The Outpost is headed by Oliver Haugen, Senior Project Leader, supported by intern Marie Trandafir, Junior Project Manager. The swissnex New York Outpost was originally located in midtown, but recently moved to the co-working space WeWork, located right in the Financial District, between the Charging Bull and Wall Street.
The environment at WeWork is simultaneously stimulating and productive—there are many cozy workspaces, and people are constantly making new connections and collaborating. This is a perfect fit for the Outpost, where Oliver and Marie can actively ‘connect dots’ and build new partnerships
Within their work area at WeWork, Oliver and Marie share space with some compatriots: Lukas Sieber, Director of the Greater Zurich Area, U.S. as well as a number of Swiss startups that take part in the CTI Market Entry Camp. These startups collaborate with swissnex to reach the American market, and to develop their pitching skills.
My first day in New York, a Monday, I had the chance to meet David de Picciotto, co-founder of iRewind, which has developed technology that films individuals in say, a marathon, and can automatically cut together a reel of just that person running through the course. (In technical terms, the technology matches camera meta-data with user positioning information to identify individuals.) David was able to spare a few minutes to sit down with me for an interview.
This visit left me with the understanding that the New York Outpost oversees and coordinates a great number of events and projects. New York City will always be one of the most fascinating and exciting cities in the U.S., and this unique atmosphere, combined with the palpable energy of Silicon Alley, make it a great opportunity for dot-connecting between Switzerland and North America.
