The Club HEC Lausanne in NYC Celebrates its First Birthday

On May 7, the Club HEC Lausanne in NYC blew out its first candle! To mark the event, a full day of celebrations awaited members of the Club HEC and friends of the University of Lausanne at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

VIP Tour of the Museum & Gold Vault – 1pm

We started in the afternoon with a special VIP tour of the Museum & Gold Vault. 26 guests joined the tour, including Ambassador André Schaller, Consul General of Switzerland in New York. The highlight: the famous Gold Vault, sitting 80 feet (24m) below street level –a much appreciated visit by our guests!

Conference “Global Banking: A Cross-Atlantic Perspective” – 6pm

The day’s focal point was a high-level lecture on the topic of “Global Banking: A Cross-Atlantic Perspective,” organized by the Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Lausanne (HEC Lausanne) with the support of swissnex Boston and hosted at the Federal Reserve Bank in Financial District, downtown Manhattan.

About 70 guests joined us to listen to two distinguished scholars from HEC Lausanne, Professors Philippe Bacchetta (Department of Economics) and Alexandre Richa (Department of Business and Tax Law), who shared with the audience their perspectives on cross-border banking.

Professor Richa took the floor to discuss recent challenges faced by banks in relation to cross-border legal risks. He was followed by Professor Bacchetta, who presented his latest research on cross-border banking during the global financial crisis. The presentations were followed by a panel discussion moderated by Professor Diane Pierret (Department of Finance), giving the audience a chance to ask questions to our speakers. The trade-off between regulation and returns, the role of central banks in global banking, and the impact of recent legal cases in corporations were tackled during the Q&A. The lecture was followed by a cocktail reception for all guests and speakers – also in the landmark building of the New York Fed.

In addition to celebrating this important milestone for the alumni network of HEC Lausanne in NYC, day’s events allowed swissnex to increase the visibility of one of Switzerland’s top business schools and engage in a high-level academic discussion with our NYC-based audience, in one of NYC’s most prestigious venues.

Celebration Dinner at Trinity Place – 9pm

Leaving room for some more culinary delicacies, a small group of HEC Alumni accompanied by our guest speakers then headed to the Trinity Place Bar & Restaurant, to enjoy a dinner menu specially crafted for the occasion.
