Isabelle Maitre (left)

Isabelle joined swissnex May 1st, splitting her time working for swissnex and the Fribourg School of Business Administration – where she’s currently finishing her Master’s degree in entrepreneurship and innovation.  She’ll invest much of her time and energy in the preparation of the Venture Leaders FinTech program, which brings Switzerland’s top notch entrepreneurs to New York City this September. We’re sure she’ll fly with it – given her background as a aircraft coordinator at Geneva airport, where she ensured on time flight departures through the coordination of ground services. Born and raised in Geneva, Isabelle loves New York for its diversity, and its renowned fashion and finance industries and is looking forward to meet people from all sorts of different professional and cultural backgrounds.

Michael Hegglin (center)

A graduate of ETH Zurich, Michael’s specialty is renewable energy and climate policy. What a perfect (and by no means coincidental) match for his main project while at swissnex; the organization of the 4th annual Swiss-US Energy Innovation Days, bringing a delegation of experts from Switzerland to New York in August. Michael, was born in Zurich but has spent his time all around the German-speaking part of Switzerland. He can’t wait to see the NYC skyline not only from the Brooklyn Bridge, but also from a bird’s eye view. Quite literally, as he is an avid skydiver with more than a thousand jumps on his record.

Elena joined swissnex back in March – how time flies! She’s wearing a second hat as Ambassador for HEC Lausanne, coordinating local alumni events for her Alma Mater. She says she’s really eager to explore the fast-paced environment with its driving eco-system and myriad of opportunities for startups. Originally from Geneva, Elena lives quite a globetrotter’s life. She’s been on not one but two study abroad semesters, one in Argentina and one in Australia. We’re glad her way led her to New York this time around and are sure she’ll fully enjoy the cultural diversity this city has to offer.

Students from ConnectUS tour NYC, where “innovation is the new black”

By Elena Bizon, Jr. Project Manager

During the week of April 18, the swissnex New York office had the pleasure of setting up a learning tour of the city’s innovation ecosystem for ConnectUS, a project led by students from the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW). The organization seeks to broaden the students’ business and intercultural understanding by linking theory with real-world experience.

The group had the opportunity to visit Brooklyn Grange, a leader in the intensive green roofing business in the US. Located on two roofs at the Brooklyn Navy Yards, the company operates one of the world’s largest rooftop soil farms. The students also received a warm welcome from the Consulate General of Switzerland in New York, where Ambassador André Schaller gave a wide-ranging and candid overview on the Swiss-US partnership. Finally, they finished their learning tour with a captivating visit of Livestream, the video live streaming platform company. The visit capped an exciting journey to the US, which also included stops in San Francisco and Boston.

Swiss Alumni Spring Break - the Pictures

At the end of March, we were thrilled to welcome more than 30 Swiss and Swiss-linked alumni at Wework Charging Bull for our traditional 'Spring Break' gathering. While New York is still waiting for warmer weather, it's been a great opportunity to celebrate spring with local alumni chapters, mainly from the University of St. Gallen, Zurich, Geneva and Lausanne as well as from the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology.
